hair drug test for work - hair care close-up

A job offer that comes with a hair drug test can feel more serious than the usual cup. It covers a much longer stretch of time, and many people aren't sure what happens at the appointment or how the results get back to the employer. Most hair tests for work check the same core drug classes as a urine test, but look back about three months instead of a few days. Here is why employers use them, what they check, what the day looks like and what is worth doing before you go. We may earn a commission if you buy through our links.

Why an employer picks hair over urine

Hair testing costs an employer more than a urine cup, so the companies that use it usually have a reason:

The tradeoff for employers is that hair is poor at catching very recent use, because new growth takes about a week to rise above the scalp. Some companies pair a hair test before hiring with urine or saliva tests later for reasonable-suspicion or post-accident testing.

What a hair test for work usually checks

PanelTypical drug classes
5-panelMarijuana (THC metabolite), cocaine, amphetamines including methamphetamine and MDMA, opiates, PCP
Expanded (often called 7, 9 or 10-panel)The five above plus some of: benzodiazepines, barbiturates, oxycodone, methadone, propoxyphene
12 or 14-panelWider prescription and synthetic opioid coverage, such as fentanyl, hydrocodone, hydromorphone or buprenorphine, depending on the lab

Alcohol isn't part of a standard hair drug panel; it needs a separate marker test. Panel contents vary by employer and lab, so if you want to know exactly what yours covers, asking HR which panel was ordered is a normal question. Our comparison of 5-panel vs 10-panel hair tests goes deeper.

How far back a work hair test goes

Labs cut about 1.5 inches of hair from the crown, closest to the scalp. Since head hair grows roughly half an inch a month, that sample is read as about the last 90 days. If your head hair is short, the collector may take body hair, which grows slower and can reflect a longer and less precise window. Our guide to which body hair can be used for drug testing explains that, and how long it takes to pass a hair follicle test walks through the growth math.

What the appointment looks like

  1. Bring ID and your paperwork. The employer or a third-party administrator usually sends a form or a code that tells the collection site which test to run.
  2. The collector checks your ID and fills out a custody form. You'll sign it.
  3. A small lock of hair is cut close to the scalp, usually from the crown, often from a couple of spots so it doesn't leave a visible patch. It is roughly as thick as a pencil.
  4. The sample is wrapped in foil, sealed and labeled in front of you, and you initial the seal.
  5. It goes to a lab, which washes the hair, screens it and confirms any positive with mass spectrometry.

The whole visit usually takes about 15 minutes. For the lab side, see our explainer on the hair drug test method.

How long results take and who sees them

Negative results often come back within a few business days. A screen positive takes longer because the lab runs a confirmation test. In many workplace programs a confirmed positive then goes to a medical review officer (MRO), a doctor who calls you to ask about prescriptions before anything is reported. The employer usually gets a simple negative, positive or cancelled result, not your full medical details.

Prescriptions

If you take a prescribed medicine that's on the panel, such as an opioid painkiller, a benzodiazepine or an amphetamine for ADHD, you don't have to announce it at the collection site. If it comes back positive, the MRO will ask for proof of the prescription and will usually report a valid prescription as negative to the employer. Keep your pharmacy and prescriber details handy. ADHD medicine methylphenidate (Ritalin, Concerta) isn't on most standard panels; see our page on the hair drug test for methylphenidate.

Marijuana and state law

Hair tests detect a THC metabolite that can reflect use weeks or months earlier, long after any effect has worn off. Several states limit how employers can use that. California, for example, bars most employers from acting on tests that only detect non-psychoactive cannabis metabolites, and New York restricts most pre-employment marijuana testing. Rules differ by state, by job and for safety-sensitive positions, so check your state's current law or ask HR if you're unsure. Our page on hair detox shampoo for weed covers how THC behaves in hair.

Is it hard to pass a hair test for work?

For occasional use well over three months ago, a hair test is usually not a problem. For regular use in the last 90 days, it's more likely to find it than a urine test would be. A few days off before the test doesn't help much, because the hair already grown is what gets tested. One-time use is a gray area; it can fall under the cutoff, but it can also show. Our hair vs urine comparison explains which drugs each test is better at catching.

Questions people ask

How far back does a hair drug test for work go?

A standard 1.5 inch head hair sample is read as roughly the last 90 days. Body hair can reflect a longer window.

What drugs does a work hair test check for?

Most check marijuana, cocaine, amphetamines including meth and MDMA, opiates and PCP. Expanded panels add drugs like benzodiazepines, oxycodone or fentanyl.

How long do hair test results take for a job?

Negatives often come back in a few business days. Positives take longer because the lab confirms them and a medical review officer may call you.

Can a hair test detect use from last week?

Usually not well. New hair takes about a week to grow above the scalp, so very recent use is often missed.

What if my hair is too short?

The collector will usually take body hair from the chest, underarm, arms or legs instead.

Do I need to tell them about my prescriptions?

Not at collection. If something confirms positive, the medical review officer will ask about prescriptions before reporting to the employer.
