If your head hair is shaved, very short or heavily treated, a hair drug test doesn't just get cancelled. The collector usually moves to body hair, and that changes what the result can show. Chest, underarm, arm and leg hair are the usual fallbacks, beard hair is sometimes used, and rules on pubic hair vary by lab. Body hair grows slower and rests longer than head hair, so it can reflect drug use going back further than the familiar 90 days, with no way to pin down exactly when. Here is which hair can be taken, how each type behaves, and what is worth knowing before your appointment. We may earn a commission if you buy through our links.

The short answer
Almost any body hair with enough length and weight can be tested. In practice collectors work down a list: head hair first, then underarm, chest, leg or arm hair, and in some programs facial hair. The lab needs a sample big enough to run a screen and a confirmation, which for body hair often means gathering hair from more than one spot. What matters for you is the time window. A standard head hair sample of about 1.5 inches is read as roughly the last 90 days. Body hair has no reliable inch-to-month conversion, so labs usually describe it as covering a longer period, often quoted as up to about a year, rather than a set number of days.
When a collector switches to body hair
- Head hair too short. Labs need enough length near the scalp to collect a usable amount. A buzz cut or shaved head usually means body hair.
- Not enough hair. Thinning hair, alopecia or a bald crown may not give the weight needed.
- Hair the program doesn't accept. Some employer or lab policies note heavily bleached or damaged hair. Policies differ, and collectors follow whatever the testing program allows.
- Religious or medical reasons. Some people can't have head hair cut. Body hair is the usual alternative, and you can raise this with the employer before the appointment.
The collector writes down where the hair came from on the custody form. That location goes to the lab and can matter when the result is reviewed.
Each type of body hair, compared
| Hair site | How often used | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Head (crown) | First choice | Grows about half an inch a month, so 1.5 inches near the root is read as roughly 90 days. Can be cut into segments to estimate timing. |
| Underarm | Common fallback | Usually enough hair for a sample. Sweat, deodorant and a longer growth cycle can all affect what it shows. See our armpit hair drug test guide. |
| Chest | Common fallback | Often thick enough on its own. Long resting phase means older use can still be present. |
| Leg | Common fallback | Shorter and finer hair, so the collector may take from a wide area. |
| Arm | Used when others are not available | Fine hair, low weight per area. Several patches may be needed. |
| Beard or facial | Accepted by some programs | Coarse and quick-growing compared with other body hair; acceptance varies by lab. |
| Pubic | Lab policy varies | Many collectors avoid it for privacy reasons, and some labs won't accept it. Ask if you're unsure. |
Why body hair can look further back
Every hair cycles between growing (anagen) and resting (telogen). On the scalp most hairs are in the growth phase at any time and grow fairly steadily, which is why labs can translate length into months. Body hair is different:
- It grows slower. A short body hair can represent many months of growth.
- More of it is resting. A larger share of body hairs sit in the resting phase at any moment, still attached but no longer growing. A resting hair can hold drug from months back.
- It's a mix. A sample is a bundle of hairs at different stages, so the result blends a long and uneven stretch of time.
So body hair can't be cut into dated segments the way head hair sometimes is. A positive tells the reviewer that drug was in the body at some point covered by those hairs, without saying when. For more on the growth math, read how long it takes to pass a hair follicle test.
What it means if you stopped using recently
People who stopped two or three months ago and shaved their head sometimes find body hair works against them. If the head hair would have mostly grown out the use period, body hair may still hold it. If you have been clean for a long time, body hair may already be clear. The point is that a buzz cut doesn't erase the history; it often moves the test to hair with a longer memory.
How much hair the lab needs
Labs ask for a set weight, commonly described for head hair as a lock about the width of a pencil. Body hair is shorter, so the same weight takes more hairs. Collectors typically cut close to the skin with clean scissors, wrap the sample in foil and seal it in an envelope in front of you. Expect them to take from one area first and add a second area if needed. Shaving every body area right before the appointment can lead to a delayed collection, a note on the paperwork, or a different test, depending on the program's rules.
Does body hair give a different result than head hair?
It can. Research comparing head and body hair from the same people has found that concentrations differ between sites, sometimes higher in body hair and sometimes lower, depending on the drug and the person. Underarm hair may also pick up drug through sweat. That is one reason labs record the site and why a reviewer may read body hair results more cautiously. Cutoffs on standard panels are set around head hair, and some guidelines treat body hair as an acceptable substitute rather than an equal one.

Product facts: detox shampoos on body hair
If you're switching to body hair, you're probably also wondering whether products help. The one most hair-test guides start with is Old Style Aloe Toxin Rid from TestClear.
- What TestClear says: it is a deep-cleansing shampoo meant to remove buildup and residue from hair.
- Maker's directions in short: wash with regular shampoo, massage Aloe Toxin Rid into damp hair, leave it 10 to 15 minutes, rinse, and repeat over the days before the test. People facing a body hair test usually apply it to every area that might be collected, not just the scalp.
- What is not proven: there is no independent published study showing it gets anyone past a hair test, head or body. Treat reviews as anecdotes.
- Skin care: underarm and groin skin is thinner and more sensitive. Rinse well and stop if it stings or turns red.
You can see Old Style Aloe Toxin Rid at TestClear, and our Aloe Toxin Rid review and how-to guide covers directions and schedules in detail.
Keep harsh routines off your skin
Routines like the Macujo method (vinegar, a salicylic acid cleanser and detox shampoo) and bleach treatments are written about head hair. On underarms, chest or groin they can burn and irritate skin badly. Never mix bleach with vinegar, ammonia or any other acid or cleaner, because the combination can release toxic gas. Our page on the Macujo method step by step describes what people do and the safety warnings.
Test your own body hair first
A home hair test kit lets you send a sample to a lab and see the result before the real collection. If your head hair is too short, you can send body hair in the kit too; check the kit's instructions for the amount. A negative saves you money and worry, and a positive tells you where you stand while you still have time to plan. Compare options in our guide to the best hair follicle drug test kits.
Prescriptions and honest answers
If you take a prescribed medicine that a panel looks for, keep the prescription details handy. In most employer programs a medical review officer, a doctor who reviews lab results, will contact you about a confirmed positive and ask about prescriptions before reporting it. Being upfront at that stage is usually the most useful thing you can do.

Questions people ask
What body hair can be used for a drug test?
Underarm, chest, leg and arm hair are the usual fallbacks when head hair is too short. Some programs accept beard hair, and rules on pubic hair vary by lab.
How far back does a body hair drug test go?
There is no exact conversion. Because body hair grows slower and rests longer, labs often describe it as covering a longer window, commonly quoted as up to about a year.
Can they take body hair if I shave my head?
Usually yes. A shaved head typically means the collector moves to body hair, which may cover a longer period than head hair would have.
Is body hair more likely to test positive?
Not always. Concentrations differ by site, drug and person. Body hair mainly changes the time window, and underarm hair can be affected by sweat.
What if I have no body hair either?
The collector follows the program's rules, which may mean a different kind of test such as urine. Shaving everything right before an appointment can be noted on the paperwork.
Can I use detox shampoo on body hair?
Some people apply products like Old Style Aloe Toxin Rid to body hair, but there is no independent proof any shampoo gets you past a hair test. Be gentle on sensitive skin.
