A shaved or bald head doesn't cancel a hair drug test. If there isn't enough hair on your head, the collector moves to body hair, usually from the chest, underarms, arms or legs. If there's no usable body hair either, the employer typically switches you to a different test, such as urine or saliva. Body hair grows differently from scalp hair and can hold a longer history, so for many people a shaved head ends up making the test reach further back, not less. Here's how the process works, step by step. We may earn a commission if you buy through our links.

What happens at the collection site
- The collector checks your head first. Most labs want about 1.5 inches of scalp hair, cut close to the skin, in a bundle roughly the thickness of a pencil. Short buzz cuts may still give enough if the collector takes hair from several spots.
- If the scalp can't provide that, they move to body hair. Chest and underarm hair are the usual choices, then arms and legs. The collector notes the source on the form so the lab knows what it's testing.
- If there's no usable hair anywhere, the collector records that, and the employer decides what happens next. Usually that's a urine or oral fluid test instead, sometimes on the same day.
Collectors are trained to treat this as routine. Plenty of people shave their heads for style, sport, work or medical reasons, and naturally bald candidates are common. Being bald isn't a problem in itself.
Which body hair can be used
| Body hair | How often it's used | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Chest | Very common first choice | Usually plenty of hair on many men |
| Underarm | Common | Can be affected by deodorant and sweat, which labs wash out |
| Arms | Common backup | Finer hair, so more area may be needed |
| Legs | Common backup | Often collected from the lower leg |
| Beard and facial hair | Some labs accept it | Policies vary, so ask the collector |
| Pubic hair | Rarely used | Many programs avoid it for privacy |

Why body hair can look further back
Scalp hair spends years in its growth phase and grows about half an inch a month, so a 1.5 inch scalp sample gives a tidy picture of roughly the last 90 days. Body hair is different. It grows more slowly, its growth phase is short, and at any moment a large share of it is resting rather than growing. A resting hair can sit in place for months while still holding drug from when it formed.
The result is that a body hair sample is a mix of hairs of different ages. Labs often describe body hair as reflecting use from up to about a year back, and they can't split it into a reliable month-by-month timeline the way they can with scalp hair. If you stopped using several months ago and were counting on the 90-day window, body hair may not match that plan.
Does shaving right before the test help?
Usually not, and it can draw attention. Shaving your head the day before a scheduled hair test doesn't remove the drug from your body hair, and a collector who sees a freshly shaved scalp and freshly shaved arms and chest may note it. If there's no hair anywhere, the employer can switch to urine or saliva, which catch recent use, or in some workplaces treat an unexplained lack of hair as a problem to discuss. Our page on whether cutting your hair helps with a hair test covers this in more detail.
If you already keep your head shaved, there's nothing to explain. Just be ready for the collector to take body hair, and dress in something that makes chest or arm hair easy to reach.
Bald from a medical condition
Hair loss from alopecia, chemotherapy, thyroid conditions or other causes is personal information, and you don't have to explain your diagnosis to a collector. Tell them there's no hair to collect, let them check, and they'll document it. If you're asked to take another kind of test instead, that's normal. If your employer's policy seems to penalize a medical condition, it's reasonable to raise it with HR, since disability laws may apply.

What if the test switches to urine?
A urine test looks at a much shorter window, usually a few days for most drugs and longer for regular marijuana use. That's a completely different timeline from hair. Our detection window calculator shows the windows for each test type, and our hair vs urine comparison explains how the two differ.
Product facts: Old Style Aloe Toxin Rid on short hair
People with short or shaved hair sometimes ask whether a detox shampoo like Old Style Aloe Toxin Rid from TestClear is worth using on scalp or body hair. The facts:
- What TestClear says it is: a deep-cleansing shampoo meant to remove residue and buildup from hair.
- Maker's directions in brief: wash first, apply to damp hair and scalp, leave on 10 to 15 minutes, rinse, and repeat over several days. Body hair would need the same attention as the scalp, since that's what may be collected.
- What isn't proven: there's no independent evidence that it removes drug from inside the hair or helps anyone pass, on head hair or body hair.
You can check the Old Style Aloe Toxin Rid page at TestClear and read our full Aloe Toxin Rid review and how-to guide. Harsh home routines such as the Macujo or Jerry G methods are even riskier on underarm and chest skin than on the scalp; never mix bleach with vinegar, acids or cleaners.
Test your own body hair first
If you're not sure what your body hair would show, a mail-in home hair test can tell you before the real one. Collect from the same area a collector would likely use, mail it in, and you'll see results by drug class. Compare options in our guide to the best hair follicle drug test kits.
Quick checklist before your appointment
- Don't shave your body hair in the days before the test if you want the collection to go quickly.
- Wear a short-sleeved or button-up shirt so chest and arm hair are easy to reach.
- Bring your ID and any paperwork the employer sent.
- If you take prescription medicine, you usually tell the medical review officer later, not the collector.
Not for regulated tests
Don't use anything here to try to change the result of a DOT-regulated test, FAA aviation test, federal employee test, military test, or court, probation or parole test. Interfering with those can count as a refusal and may be illegal.

Questions people ask
Can you do a hair drug test if you're bald?
Yes. The collector takes body hair instead, usually from the chest, underarms, arms or legs. If there's none, the employer normally switches to urine or saliva.
How far back does a body hair drug test go?
Often up to about a year, because body hair grows slowly and spends a lot of time resting. It can't be split into a neat monthly timeline.
Will shaving my head get me out of a hair test?
No. Collectors move to body hair, which can show a longer history than scalp hair.
Do they take pubic hair for drug tests?
Rarely. Many programs avoid it and prefer chest, underarm, arm or leg hair.
How much hair is needed?
Roughly a pencil-thick bundle. From the scalp that's about 1.5 inches long; with body hair the collector may take from more than one spot.
