Most hair follicle test results come back within about one to five business days after the sample reaches the lab. A clean (negative) sample is usually the fastest, often reported within a day or two of arrival. A sample that screens positive takes longer, because it has to go through a second confirmation test and, for workplace tests, a review by a medical review officer before anyone sees a final result. Add shipping time on the front end, and the full wait from the day you're cut to the day your employer hears is commonly around three to seven business days. Here's where the time goes, what can stretch it, and what you can do in the meantime. We may earn a commission from links on this page.

The timeline, step by step
Hair results feel slow because the sample travels and gets handled in stages. Each stage has its own clock:
- Collection (day 0). A collector cuts a small lock of hair, about the thickness of a pencil, close to the scalp at the back of the head. It's sealed in foil and an envelope with a chain-of-custody form. The appointment itself usually takes 10 to 20 minutes.
- Shipping to the lab (1 to 2 days). Hair doesn't need refrigeration, so it goes by courier or overnight mail. Samples collected late on a Friday may sit until Monday.
- Accessioning (same day the lab receives it). Lab staff check the seals and paperwork, log the sample and assign it a number.
- Washing and screening (about 1 business day). The hair is washed to remove surface contamination, cut finely or ground, and extracted. A screening test looks for each drug class on the panel.
- Negative report (often 24 to 72 hours after arrival). If nothing hits the cutoff, the result is released.
- Confirmation for non-negatives (adds 1 to 3 business days). Any screen positive is retested on a fresh portion with mass spectrometry, which identifies the exact compound and amount.
- Medical review (adds about 1 to 3 days). For most employer programs, a medical review officer (MRO), a doctor, looks at confirmed positives and tries to reach you before reporting, in case there's a legitimate explanation such as a prescription.

Typical turnaround at a glance
| Result type | From lab receipt | From the day you're cut |
|---|---|---|
| Negative | About 1 to 2 business days | About 2 to 4 business days |
| Confirmed positive, no MRO | About 3 to 5 business days | About 4 to 7 business days |
| Confirmed positive with MRO review | About 4 to 7 business days | About 5 to 10 business days |
| Home hair kit (mailed by you) | Varies by kit | Add your own mailing time, often several days |
These are typical ranges reported by labs and collection sites, not promises. Your employer's lab, the panel size and the day of the week all shift them.
Does a long wait mean you failed?
Not necessarily, but it's the most common reason for a longer wait. Negatives are released fast, while non-negatives go through confirmation and review. Other things also add days that have nothing to do with drugs:
- A weekend or holiday in the middle of the process.
- Paperwork problems, such as a missing signature or ID mismatch on the custody form.
- Too little hair in the sample, which can mean a recollection.
- A larger panel, like 10 or 12 drug classes, which can take a little longer than a basic 5-panel.
- An employer or third-party administrator that's slow to pass the result along.
- The MRO trying to reach you. If you see a call from an unknown number after a test, pick it up or call back.
A short wait doesn't guarantee a pass either. The only result that counts is the one your employer receives.
Who actually gets the result
For an employment test, the lab reports to the employer, the MRO or the screening company your employer uses, not to you. You'll usually hear from HR or a recruiter. If you want a copy, you can ask the employer or the MRO. If you used a home hair test, the result comes to you privately, and nobody else sees it.
How to read the report when it arrives
Results are listed by drug class as negative or positive, sometimes with the measured level in pg/mg. A negative means any amount found was below the cutoff. A positive means it was confirmed above the cutoff for that drug. Our page on hair strand test results explained covers cutoffs, levels and what each line means.
What the result can and can't tell anyone
A hair result shows that a drug was present in the hair segment tested, roughly the 90 days before collection. It doesn't show when inside that window, how often, or whether you were impaired at work. Very recent use, roughly the last week, usually isn't in the sample yet because that hair hasn't grown out far enough to be cut.

Want an answer sooner? Test yourself first
If the wait is what's stressing you, the time to get clarity is before the real test. A home hair test lets you mail a sample to a lab and see your own result privately. It won't be faster than the employer's lab, but it means the official result won't be a surprise. Our roundup of the best hair follicle drug test kits compares the options.
Product facts: Old Style Aloe Toxin Rid
People who expect a hair test often look at detox shampoos while they wait for a test date. The best known is Old Style Aloe Toxin Rid, sold by TestClear. TestClear's directions call for repeated washes over 3 to 10 days before the test, often paired with Zydot Ultra Clean on the day. Those are the maker's claims. No independent, peer-reviewed research shows that any shampoo reliably removes drugs from inside the hair, so it's not a guarantee and shouldn't be treated as one. Once your hair has been cut, nothing you do afterward changes the sample. If you want to read the maker's own description before a future test, see the Old Style Aloe Toxin Rid product page at TestClear, and our Aloe Toxin Rid review and how-to-use guide for the honest version.
Some online routines, like the Macujo or Jerry G methods, combine vinegar, salicylic acid, detergent and detox shampoo. They're rough on your scalp and unproven. Never mix bleach with vinegar, acids or household cleaners; that can release toxic gas.
What to do while you wait
- Keep your phone on and answer calls from unknown numbers. An MRO call is your chance to explain a prescription.
- Gather prescription records for anything you take that could appear on a panel, such as opioids, amphetamine-based ADHD medicine or benzodiazepines.
- Don't call the lab directly expecting a result. Labs generally release results only to the party that ordered the test.
- If it's been more than about a week and a half, ask your recruiter or HR contact whether they've received anything. Results sometimes sit in an inbox.
If the result is positive
You usually have the right to talk to the MRO before the result is final. In many programs you can also ask for the remaining portion of your sample to be retested at a second certified lab, often at your own cost. Ask about the deadline for that request right away. A retest checks whether the drug is there; it doesn't reset the window.
Tests this page doesn't cover
DOT, FAA, federal, military, court, probation and parole programs follow their own rules and timelines. Don't use detox products on those tests; tampering can be treated as a refusal. Ask the program or your lawyer about timing and your rights.

Questions people ask
How long does it take to get hair follicle test results?
Usually about one to five business days after the lab receives the sample. Negatives are fastest; positives take longer because of confirmation and medical review.
Do negative hair test results come back faster?
Yes. A negative sample can be reported after the screening step, often within 24 to 72 hours of reaching the lab.
Why is my hair follicle test taking so long?
Common reasons are a confirmation test on a non-negative screen, an MRO trying to reach you, weekends or holidays, paperwork problems or a slow employer.
Will I get my hair test results myself?
For employment tests, results go to the employer or MRO. You can ask them for a copy. Home kit results come straight to you.
Can I change my result after the hair is cut?
No. Once the sample is collected, nothing you do afterward affects it.
