detox shampoo how to use - hair care close-up

You bought a detox shampoo, maybe one of the popular beauty ones from brands like OUAI, Rituals or Living Proof, or maybe a drug-test shampoo, and the back of the bottle just says "lather, rinse." That's not much to go on. Used well, a detox wash leaves your hair light, clean and bouncy. Used badly, it leaves it squeaky, tangled and dry. Here's how to use one step by step, how often makes sense for your hair, and how the drug-test kind is a different routine altogether. We may earn a commission if you buy through links on this page.

The short version

Wet your hair thoroughly, use a coin-sized amount worked into the scalp first, let it sit for a minute or two, rinse well, and always follow with conditioner on the lengths. Most people only need a detox shampoo once a week or once every two weeks, with a gentle shampoo the rest of the time. Your own bottle's label comes first if it says something different.

Step by step

  1. Soak your hair completely. Give it a full minute under warm water, not hot. Fully wet hair spreads the shampoo evenly, so you need less of it.
  2. Start small. A coin-sized amount for short to shoulder-length hair, a bit more for long or very thick hair. Rub it between your palms first.
  3. Go to the scalp first. Build-up from dry shampoo, styling products and oil sits mostly at the roots. Massage with your fingertips, not your nails, in small circles for about a minute.
  4. Let the suds run down the lengths. You don't need to scrub the ends. The rinse water carries enough cleanser through them, and that protects the driest part of your hair.
  5. Leave it on briefly. One to three minutes is typical. Some brands suggest a short sit time so the cleansing ingredients can work. Longer isn't better and can dry hair out.
  6. Rinse longer than you think. Leftover residue makes hair dull. Rinse until your hair stops feeling slippery at the roots.
  7. Repeat only if needed. If the first wash barely lathered, there was a lot of build-up. A second, smaller wash usually foams up fast.
  8. Condition the mid-lengths and ends. A detox wash lifts a lot of oil, so put moisture back. A mask once in a while helps if your hair runs dry.

How often to use it, by hair type

Your hairA reasonable starting point
Oily scalp, fine hairOnce a week, sometimes twice
Normal hair, regular styling productsOnce every one to two weeks
Dry, curly or coily hairOnce every two to four weeks, always with a rich conditioner
Color-treated hairSparingly, and only if the label says it's color-safe
Hard water at homeEvery week or two, since minerals build up faster

If your hair starts feeling rough or your scalp gets tight or itchy, back off. That's the most common sign you're overdoing it. If you're unsure which kind of wash you need, our guide to detox vs clarifying shampoo explains the difference.

Before or after other products?

Use the detox wash first, then conditioner, then any leave-in or styling product. If you use a scalp scrub, do it on a different day or use the scrub first and keep the detox wash short. For a hair mask, a detox wash right before is a good time, since the clean hair takes it up evenly. If you're comparing it with your everyday shampoo, see detox shampoo vs regular shampoo.

How to tell it did its job

Right after rinsing, your roots should feel clean but not squeaky, and the water should run clear without a slippery film. Once dry, a good detox wash leaves hair lighter, with more lift at the roots, and styling products grip better. If your hair looks dull or feels coated, you probably didn't rinse long enough or used too much product. If it feels like straw, you left it on too long, skipped conditioner, or are using it too often for your hair type. Adjust one thing at a time over the next few washes so you can tell what actually helped.

Drug-test detox shampoos are used differently

Some people searching this are using a shampoo sold for hair drug tests, which is a different product with a different routine. TestClear sells Old Style Aloe Toxin Rid for people facing a hair follicle test. Its maker's directions call for repeated washes, with the shampoo left on for several minutes each time, over a number of days before the test, rather than the occasional wash you'd use with a beauty detox shampoo. Our Aloe Toxin Rid review and directions lays out the maker's schedule step by step.

Keep the facts straight. TestClear describes what the shampoo is designed to do, but there's no independent proof it lowers drug levels inside the hair below a lab cutoff, and nobody can promise it works. Labs wash hair before testing, and the compounds they look for sit inside the hair shaft. The only sure way to pass a hair test is not using during the window it covers. Before you spend money, a home hair test kit can tell you privately where you stand. Our guide to home hair test kits explains how they work.

You may also see the Macujo or Jerry G methods, home routines that combine shampoos with vinegar, acne wash, bleach or dye. There's no independent evidence they work, and they can burn your scalp and damage your hair. Never mix bleach with vinegar, acids or other cleaners, since the fumes can be dangerous.

Questions people ask

How long do you leave detox shampoo on?

For a beauty detox shampoo, one to three minutes is typical. Follow your bottle's label if it says otherwise.

How often should you use a detox shampoo?

Most people use one once every one to two weeks. Oily hair may need it weekly, while dry or curly hair often does better every two to four weeks.

Do you use conditioner after detox shampoo?

Yes. A detox wash removes a lot of oil, so condition the mid-lengths and ends every time.

Can I use detox shampoo every day?

It isn't meant for daily use and can dry out your hair and scalp. Use a gentle shampoo between detox washes.

Is a drug-test detox shampoo used the same way?

No. Products like Old Style Aloe Toxin Rid come with their own multi-day directions, and there's no independent proof they get you under a lab cutoff.
