how long does adderall pill stay in your system - pills and capsules

Whether you take Adderall as prescribed or you're wondering about a pill you took once, the detection clock is the same: amphetamine's half-life is about 9 to 14 hours, and most people clear a single dose from urine in about 1 to 3 days. Here's the detail by formulation and test type.

Quick note: Adderall is a Schedule II stimulant. Taking someone else's prescription is illegal and can be hard on your heart. This page is information, not advice to misuse it.

IR vs XR

Instant-release Adderall peaks in about 3 hours and lasts around 4 to 6 hours. Adderall XR releases in two stages and lasts about 10 to 12 hours. XR doesn't change the half-life much, but because the drug enters over a longer stretch, detection can run several hours to about a day longer than IR at the same dose.

Dose and urine pH

A 10 mg tablet leaves less amphetamine in urine than a 30 mg XR capsule. Amphetamine also clears much faster in acidic urine and much slower in alkaline urine, a classic finding in pharmacology. Diet, antacids and some medications shift urine pH. Labs check pH as a validity measure, so don't try to game it.

Will it show on a 5-panel?

Yes. Adderall is amphetamine, and amphetamines are on virtually every standard panel. Federal urine cutoffs are 500 ng/mL for the screen and 250 ng/mL for confirmation. Our cutoff page has the full list.

If you have a prescription

Keep taking your medication as prescribed. A Medical Review Officer will verify a valid prescription and usually report the result as negative to the employer. Have your pharmacy details ready. Don't announce meds to the collector unless asked.

Multiple pills

If you took pills on consecutive days, the clock starts at your last dose. Amphetamine from earlier doses isn't fully cleared before the next one arrives, so levels stack a little.

Check yourself

A home amphetamine strip at 500 ng/mL matches most lab screens. Test on day 2 and day 3 with first-morning urine for the most cautious reading. Our detection window calculator gives a rough range, and our deeper guide on one Adderall pill covers the hour-by-hour pattern.

Safety

Mixing Adderall with alcohol, other stimulants or some antidepressants raises heart and blood pressure risks. If use is getting hard to control, SAMHSA's helpline at 1-800-662-4357 is free and confidential.

Saliva tests

Oral fluid cutoffs for amphetamines are 50 ng/mL screen and 25 ng/mL confirm under federal guidelines. A single pill is usually detectable in saliva for about one to two days. If your employer uses a mouth swab, your window is shorter than urine but not by much for this drug.

False positives and confirmation

Some cold medicines and other drugs can cross-react on amphetamine immunoassays. Lab GC-MS confirmation identifies amphetamine specifically and clears most false positives. If you take a valid prescription, confirmation plus MRO review is how you get reported as negative.

Blood work and Adderall

Routine blood work does not test for Adderall. A targeted blood toxicology panel can detect amphetamine for roughly 12 hours to a day after a dose. Pre-employment tests almost always use urine, not blood.

Hair testing

Hair can show amphetamine for about 90 days after repeated use. A single pill often falls below hair cutoffs. If your test is a hair test, the timeline is completely different from urine; see our hair follicle guide.

Comparing Adderall to other amphetamines

Methamphetamine stays detectable a bit longer on average (often 2-5 days in urine). MDMA is usually about 1-3 days. The basic amphetamine immunoassay often reacts to all of them; confirmation testing tells them apart. Adderall confirmation shows amphetamine, not methamphetamine.

Practical prep if you have a test

  1. If prescribed, keep taking it and prepare pharmacy details for the MRO.
  2. If not prescribed, stop and count 3-4 days before a urine test, longer if you took multiple doses.
  3. Check with a home amphetamine strip.
  4. Don't overhydrate.
  5. List any cold medicine you've taken; some can cross-react on screens.

Kids, teens and Adderall detection

Children often clear amphetamine faster than adults because of higher metabolic rates relative to body size, but detection windows are still measured in days, not hours. School and sports testing programs vary widely. This page focuses on adult workplace-style testing.

Drug interactions that change how you feel (not always the test)

Acidifying agents (like high-dose vitamin C) can speed amphetamine excretion; alkalinizing agents slow it. The effect on a real-world test is unpredictable and not a safe strategy. Mixing Adderall with MAOIs is dangerous. Alcohol plus Adderall can mask intoxication and strain the heart. None of these combinations is a good idea before a test or otherwise.

Bottom line

An Adderall pill is usually detectable in urine for about 1 to 3 days, in saliva for about 1 to 2 days, and in blood for under a day. XR can stretch that a little. A prescription is handled through the MRO. A home amphetamine test is the most reliable way to know your own timeline before anyone else tests you at work.

Questions people ask

Can I take Adderall the morning of a drug test if prescribed?

Yes. Take it as prescribed and be ready to verify the prescription with the Medical Review Officer if contacted.

Does coffee change how long Adderall stays in your system?

Caffeine does not meaningfully change amphetamine detection time, though combining stimulants increases heart strain.

How long does Vyvanse stay in your system compared with Adderall?

Vyvanse (lisdexamfetamine) is converted to dextroamphetamine in the body. Urine windows are similar to Adderall, roughly 1-3 days for occasional use.

How long does one Adderall stay in urine?

Usually about 1-3 days for a single dose at federal cutoffs.

Does Adderall XR stay longer than IR?

Often by several hours to about a day.

Will Adderall show as meth?

It shows on the amphetamine panel. Confirmation identifies amphetamine specifically.
